our non-surgical treatments.
Non-Surgical Treatments
In patients who do not have advanced or complex periodontal disease
and bone loss, treatment can be done in a relative simple and
minimally invasive procedure.
This is often accomplished through “non-surgical” periodontal
treatment, including “scaling and root planing” . The goal of
treatment in this type of situation is to thoroughly remove from the
roots of affected teeth the accumulated plaque and tartar, smoothing
the root surfaces and removing infected gum tissue in the area.
For some patients, after scaling and root planing, they do not require
any further active treatment, including surgery. However, the majority
of patients will require long term professional care done by having
their teeth thoroughly cleaned every 3-4 months. Non-surgical therapy
does have its limitations, however, and when it does not achieve the
necessary stabilization of infection and progressive bone loss,
surgery may be indicated to stabilize the tendency for gum and bone
breakdown.
