For many people who are missing one or more teeth, dental implants
can be used to replace the roots of teeth and allow new teeth to be
built on them. The benefits of dental implants include an increased
chewing efficiency and improved speech and appearance.
Implants can be the solution when it has become difficult or impossible
to wear a removable denture. Portions of the jaw that may be missing due
to an accident, disease, or birth defect can often be reconstructed
using dental implants. With years of university-based research and
clinical use, dental implants are now a long-lasting, esthetically
pleasing alternative to missing teeth.
Due to a phenomenon known as "osseointegration," meaning that bone
actually attaches itself to the implant, these anchors provide a strong
foundation that allows people with missing teeth to chew comfortably and
efficiently.
The implant procedure is usually performed in two steps:
First, the implants are placed in the jaw where they remain for three
to six months while healing takes place. The implant itself consists of
a tiny titanium cylinder or screw which is surgically implanted and
serves as a "root system" for your replacement teeth. If missing teeth
will be an esthetic embarrassment during the healing period, temporary
replacement teeth can be provided for the healing period, so neither
your appearance nor normal social activities will be affected.
The implants are exposed by making a small opening in the gum area just
over the top of the implant. This allows the restorative dentist to
start the crown building steps.
With the use of modern anesthesia technology, implant surgery can be
done in the dental office with little or no discomfort.
Once healing is completed, the final replacement teeth are attached to
the supporting implants. These replacements look and feel like real
teeth.
Replacement teeth can involve either a single tooth or several teeth.
Some can be made removable, others can be placed so as not to be
removable.
Accepted by the American Dental Association, dental implants have been
used for many years.
A discussion with our surgeon and your restorative dentist will
determine if you are a candidate for dental implants. As a rule, age is
not a barrier to implant treatment if you are in good health. In fact,
thousands of people of all ages are turning to dental implants to
replace a single missing tooth, several teeth, or all teeth.
