If you're diagnosed with periodontal disease, your periodontist may
recommend periodontal surgery. Periodontal surgery is necessary when
your periodontist determines that the tissue around your teeth is
unhealthy and cannot be repaired with non-surgical treatment. One
approach involves trimming away infected tissue and smoothing ragged
bone areas under the gum line. Another technique is to regenerate lost
bone support around teeth and increase the long term prognosis.
Membranes and bone grafts can be implanted next to teeth below the gum
line for this regeneration procedure and may be used along with
antibiotics or new bioactive gels to promote maximal healing.
New research findings point to the increasingly direct relationship
between periodontal disease and heart disease. This finding makes
diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease a potentially life-saving
procedure!
